Gen Z & Digital Isolation

Is it so strange that Generation Z is feeling unwell?

An editorial illustration created for the main spread of the Culture section in Sydsvenskan (both print and digital editions). The artwork visually explores the psychological well-being of Generation Z, focusing on digital dependency, screen time, and modern alienation.

Concept & Symbolism

  • The Keyhole Metaphor: A central keyhole silhouette creates a voyeuristic framing device. It establishes a sharp boundary between the dark, external world and the brightly lit inner sanctum of the character, emphasizing isolation and the collapse of privacy.

  • Details & Narrative: The character is completely absorbed in their smartphone, while a dark shadow behind them mimics the posture—signifying the duality between the physical self and the digital persona.

  • Youth Culture Markers: The space is cluttered with contemporary icons: a sticker-covered laptop, a skateboard, a VR headset, a guitar, and tangled charging cables that loop around the room like digital shackles.

Style & Palette

  • Aesthetic: A high-contrast, bold graphic style that blends clean line art with a comic-book aesthetic.

  • Colors: Midnight blue evokes melancholy and solitude, stark white light creates a strong compositional focus, and muted terracotta red adds emotional weight and guides the viewer’s eye.

  • Format: Horizontal spread (Print / Web Banner).
