Editorial Illustration Series for Sydsvenskan
Families Separated by War
Publication: Sydsvenskan
Text by: Kalle Kniivilä, Swedish journalist
Technique: Ink, watercolor, digital collage
Concept:
The series was created for Kalle Kniivilä’s report on Ukrainian families separated by war and on how the war has changed people’s lives.
Portraits of real people are combined with maps, video calls, empty rooms, and fragments of everyday life during wartime. These elements convey both the geographical distance and the emotional connection between family members.
Each illustration is based on the story of a specific person. The visual imagery complements the journalistic text while preserving respect for the people portrayed and the documentary nature of the report.
Key Features: Visual storytelling: several personal stories are brought together in a coherent editorial series.
Working with journalistic material: the illustrations develop the themes of the report and express what can be difficult to communicate through words alone.
Emotional accuracy: fear, separation, hope, and inner resilience are conveyed without unnecessary dramatization.
Integration with the layout: the images are adapted for both the website and the printed edition of the newspaper.
