God, Cannabis, and the American Rollercoaster

Project: “God, Cannabis, and the American Rollercoaster”
Category: Editorial Illustration / Pop Art

The Task: Create the lead illustration for an analytical essay by Swedish author Susanna Alakoski detailing her journey across the United States. The core theme of the article explores the deep political and social divide between "reds" and "blues" in America.

Goal: Convey the road-trip atmosphere and the metaphor of crisis through a powerful visual narrative.

Concept & Metaphors: The composition is built on a cinematic, first-person perspective (POV):

The Driver’s Seat: The viewer is placed directly behind the wheel. The stenciled Route 66 logo on the asphalt instantly establishes the geography of the road trip.

Eyes in the Mirror: The author's gaze in the rearview mirror represents a sober, detached outsider observing the historical chaos.

The Silhouette Landscape: On the horizon, the rollercoaster structures gracefully twist to form a monumental male profile. The track has become an ideological amusement ride where the opposing trains ("reds" celebrating at the peak and "blues" plunging down) are locked onto the exact same rails.

Conceptual Billboards: The left billboard (GOD, CANNABIS, BURGERS) ironically sums up the eclectic reality of rural America. The right billboard (NO KINGS!) is styled as a strict regulatory road sign, acting as a powerful anti-authoritarian manifesto.

Style & Technique: The artwork is executed in the classic aesthetics of 1960s retro comic books:

Halftone Dots: The dense dot patterns in the style of Roy Lichtenstein give the digital artwork a tactile, print-like weight.

Poster Contrast: Thick ink outlines combined with a restricted yet vibrant palette (scarlet, cyan, black, and ochre) ensure high readability on both the editorial page and smartphone screens.
